I should include a picture of mine but I have what I thought was a Z1 reproduction wire harness. Came time to put it on and I found out that it has several different wire connectors (extras actually) and it does not work. It works but it just wont turn on my gauge and tail lights and it doesnt have the neutral switch light come on. I didnt buy it I got it from someone else. Heres the deal though, if I go online to the several different sites selling these they ALL have the same differnt connectors pictured with their "Z1 wire harness"?? Anyone ever bought one and installed it?
BTW I know my stuff works because I do have a factory wire harness that does work.

I purchased a new harness for a 78 KZ 1000 A2A.....one of the best moves I made....plug and play.

Wire harness may not work from model to model....even within the same model year. If you dont get the right one....start cutting, splicing and patching.

I'm running one but I did have to do some mods but I think it was due to using the earlier Z1 handle bar controls. I'll have the take off this week sometime and get a pic of what I had to change.

I bought one @ 4 years ago and just put it on @ 1 year ago. Really impressed with the quality of it... it looked factory. I think I got it from Z1Parts.net. There are only 2 wires out of the whole harness that are ? At the main harness connection (under tank). I have a brown wire with blue broken stripes on it (female conn.) that I'm not sure where it goes.

And there is a black wire coming from the headlight with a male conn (under tank location) that I figure is there for the clutch lever that I don't need anyway as I'm running a PM master cyl. for my hyd clutch mod.

I could not find the starter wire that goes to the starter relay so I added my own. Hope this helps,

Doug

I had same wires void when installing mine...but looked at wire diagram in manual and it showed the brown loose/not used....cant rem the blue....might be hazard switch wire. Also had the light checker 3-prong not used.

The blue/white in some later bikes is a wire going to switched power such as....lights, turn signals, main fuse box.

What is your year and model of bike.

This is a 1977 KZ1000A1. I made an error in my previous reply, the black wire (male bullet conn.) is coming from the new harness toward the headlight... this is the wire I'm not sure of... I can't find the other end of it @ the elec. panel fusebox area. It has no voltage on it with key switched on. I tied a piece of green garbage wire on it.

In the pic above the brown wire with blue (or green) broken stripes on it (my fluke probe is inserted into it) this wire has 12.6 volts with key switched on... I don't know what this is for. There is another wire exactly the same in the same harness that feeds my rear lighting (I believe?) In this pic (with my red photoshop arrows) I made my own wire (yellow using original boots) that goes to my starter solenoid as I could not find the correct one in the new harness. As you can see all the other wires jive... I used my tripod to get a clearer pic. I'm not sure if there are different harnesses being re-popped for the market or not... maybe Jeff will chime in. I had many elec gremlins when I installed the harness but they were almost all ground issues.... just as a reminder, you do have the paint grounded or sanded off under your switch pods? I had to do mine 3 times before I nailed it

BLACK WIRES:

the black wire your looking for may be one of the bar control harness black wire.

both right and left bar controls have black wires. The right has one the left has two according to 1977 A1 or A2 wire diagram.

1. the right bar switches/control have one black wire comming off the start button. you need to connect black wires between switches. It goes to the left bar switches/controls to the toggle kill switch.

2. left bar switches/controls to the toggle kill switch shows two black. We talked about one the other black wire goes to the starter relay black pigtail....will be a black wire comming off the relay where the positive batt cable connects.

Going off memory here so be gentle, I believe the brown with stripes is the emergency flasher wiring and thinking the black is your horn.

I do now know this is not a wire harness for a Z1. Biggest problem is that it has a 4 pin fuse box connector, that was one of the extras I was talking about. I think its a 76 or later harness, Ill post a pic when I get a chance.
