Battery for my 74 Z1?
04 Dec 2012 10:18
I'm looking for a battery for the 74 900 I'm working on. What's a good battery to install? I seen Exide battery's at Walmart, but the battery chart stops at the early 90's.
What's my best option?
Thanks.

I've used Sears Diehard and Yuasa batteries with great success. Ed

My KZ650 uses the 44355 battery; I don't know if your bike uses the same. Ed

Sears Diehard motorcycle batteries (at least the one I purchased for my Z1 and my KZ) years ago were made by Yuasa in Reading, PA. Both a Sears "DieEasy" and a Yuasa battery left me stranded twice on the road. No slow weakening battery, just a sudden failure on the road.
So I stay a away from both brands. Lessons learned. Motorcycle News magazine talked about this issue with Yuasa in Reading, PA several years ago. Don't know if Yuasa USA got there act together now.

Sometimes, "battery failure" while riding might result from a failed ground connection where the negative battery cable attaches to rear of the engine.
The lug at end of cable may have corroded or deteriorated, and might have just fallen apart.
And BTW, it's imo better to attach the negative battery cable to the engine, which is more likely to achieve the best ground for ignition purposes, rather than attaching it (for whatever reason) to only the chassis.
Good Fortune!

The wet cell type are cheapest but the AGM type are probably a lot better for MC service.

The olny thing I could find in my area was a YUASA battery. I went with the YB14L-A2 model. It's a step up from the original battery. I could have bought a sealed battery, but it was over $90.

Last year I bought a cheap ($40) parts unlimited battery from my local independent dealer. Fully charged No issues with it. And he delivered it, afterwork.
