IC Igniter wiring? was created by 750steve
If doing a fresh rewire does the IC igniter need a live feed when the ignition is turned on or is it wired that it only gets current wnen the starter button is pushed?
Bike in question is a Zephyr 750 but im sure that question will relate to any bike. I've looked at a GPz750 wiring diagrem & im unclear hence the question.

Steve, It is my understanding that power is fed from the keyed ignition switch to the kill switch, which when set to on passes power to one of the start button leads. This same lead passes power to the coils and the IC igniter. So power is passed to the IC igniter when the kill switch is set to on. The IC igniter has a ground of its own and the plugs ground the coils so the circuit is complete.
The other side (lead) of the start button passes to the clutch lockout and or the kickstand lockout and then to the starter relay to turn the starter motor. Again the relay has its own ground and the circuit is complete. The starter button is just a switch that passes power from the keyed ignition switch via the kill switch to starter relay and the starter.

Yes, basically anytime the coils have 12v, the igniter gets 12v as well.
The igniter does not use much power, and if the crank is not turning, the coils won't have any current through them.
