1980 kz 1000 speedo problems

like the tittle says, iam having problems with my speedo. My speedo bounces around alot usally by 10 to 15 mph bounces.. It mainly does it when speeding up and slowing down but also does it some at constant speed. You can shake the speedo with it on the bike and it will bounce. Then sometimes it dont work right at all, It will just bounce from 10 or 20 to zero. Then just out off nowhere it starts reading correctly again yet will still bounce. I would like to repair it possible just dont know what i need to fix it or where to get the parts. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Eric

The seal is probably out of the mechanism. The best option is Bob at Zresto. It will cost you around 100 bucks but it will be restored.

Check the cables.

mine does the same thing over 60mph and up.....

i have read that there is a dampening oil in the speedo to settle the needle. when this dries up or leaks out the needle will float.

so by the sounds of it, it would probably be smarter to just find another nice one.

the problem i ran into with buying another, was the 1 i bought didnt work right either. thats why i desided to go with something of a more modern bike. i switched to zrx gauges.

I have another question. I have a good extra tach that i dissasembled to take parts from. The question i have is. Are the tach drive and speedo drive the same? If so could i just swap faces? or could i use any parts off it to fix mine?

Pull the cable out of its housing and clean/regrease to see if it helps

I have tried to grease it with no luck its the speedo that is the problem. I believe the "dampner" is bad maybe lost its oil. i will just replace it. Just thought if i could make it work.
