Gauge lights rarely turn on

The lights on my speedo and tach were intermittent and now are basically permanently off. Every once and a while I will turn the bike on and realize "Hey, I've got lights" so I know it is not the bulb.

Neutral/oil/turn lights all work fine.

Any idea what I should be checking first? Is there something that commonly comes loose before I start trying to trace every wire?
