Timing advancer cam

I've disassembled my timing advancer on my 1979 KZ750 and lost track of which way the cam was on. My manual has this very helpful picture showing how the line on the cam is supposed to line up with the notch in the advancer's plate.

The problem is my plate has no such notch. I thought maybe that because in the pic the line is directly opposite the F mark that I could just do the same but neither of the ways the cam will go on puts the line opposite the F mark like in the pic.

I know the easy answer ought to be put it on, try and start the bike. If it won't start, turn the cam around.

But the whole reason I dug into this was to troubleshoot an ignition problem. So the bike already wouldn't start.

So I really need to figure out which way the cam is supposed to go on so I'll at least know that's right while I try and continue to troubleshoot my ignition problem.

Anybody know which way it's supposed to go on?

Is it possible yours has the hole like a KZ650 instead of a notch? Ed

Yes! That's exceptionally helpful. I do have a hole like that in my advancer plate.

Many thanks Ed!

Would install the rotor so the points begin to open just before the pistons reach TDC.

The opening of the points is the event that causes the coil to fire.

The points should begin opening when the F mark aligns with the case mark.

Good Fortune! :)

I lost the rubbers on the end of cams. Is this a problem? if so...how do you correct it.

Thanks

If it was mine I would replace the whole unit with a NOS one OR find a used unit on eBay that has the rubbers and just replace the weights. I wouldn't keep running it without them. Ed
