1980 kz1000 right handlebar switch

Has anyone rebuild the starter button on one of these? My starter button fell out. I have the button and I also have a spring but I can not figure out how it goes back together. I am guessing the button portion is cracked as only a small portion of it has a lip.

Any ideas?

The switch is pretty simple, a spring for retraction when the button is released, & a phenolic or insulated part holding the electrical contacts, and that's it. When the start button is pushed, the contacts are made, sending the voltage/current to the pull in coil on the starter solenoid.

you can try Mfolks suggestion first, its free, & it wont cost you a dime, if you see that there is a problem with the button being cracked, you can probably get a new one for the same price of a used one on flea bay

one would think that shoving just the button in to make contact would get it to turn over. It does nothing.....

Opened up the switch housing? Possibly a broken solder joint is causing the problem, as the older bikes are having failed or crumbled solder joints.

My button on my 77 did the same thing. I ordered just the button from Redline Cycles. It's kind of a pain to install it, but much cheaper than a whole switch assembly.
