How do u cure a "jumpy" speedo needle?
31 Jul 2012 23:52
New cable, and the gauges have been restored by Bob at Z-Resto... The needle jumps quite a bit Lube problem? Gear drive? They say the cable should be plugged in at a 2 o-clock setting. Anyone?

Try this - Pull the inner cable from the sleeve; wipe it clean; put a thin coat of wheel bearing grease on in (thin coat); and reinstall. Also, make sure the speedo gear unit is installed (2 o'clock position) as stated in manual). Ed

did u ask Bob about it? was it like that before the resto??
i read somewhere that there is oil inside the gauge, this acts as a damper to steady the needle. if the oil leaks out the needle will float. aparently u cannot replace it ?

Hey 300kph, how did this turn out for you? Did you find a way to cure this problem?
These gauges have dampening oil inside the drive. According to ZResto, you can't replace it. Just have to locate a suitable donor. But, if you already had them restored, you know this and that may not be the problem at all.
Did you clean and lube the cable and check your drive at the axle for proper engagement/clocking ?
Just wanting to know what you came up with.

I don't know where the oil in the gauge fable comes from, but there isn't any. They use a simple friction drive thing, don't exactly know what to call it, but the cable spins a unit in your tach or speedo, then that unit is kind of a round clutch, kind of like the old clutch on a gocart or mini bike except smaller of course. The needle is attached to the clutch, the cable spins and the faster it spins, the more this little clutch engages and moves the needle. A simple mechanical device. In my years all jumping problems have always been cable related.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

From ZResto web site:
www.zresto.com/page2.php
Notice the round cylinder directly atop the spring. This is the internal ?damper". If your gauge has a needle that "wanders",...at speed or RPM, and your cables are good,....this is the culprit. The damper itself holds oil, and cannot be fixed, unless this whole drive unit is replaced with one that works properly.
