Kz400 Ic igniter was created by Gilbertson
I recently Aquired a few kz400's of different years, the one I chose to restore, a '77. The original problem was that there was no spark and the carburetor was varnished. After swapping coils Ic igniters and making sure there were no shorts I fired it up directly spraying ether into the intake ports (carburators off being cleaned). after sitting for a week the carbs were done and it was ready to go. Little had I noticed one of the coil wires broke and shorted (I guess). Now there's no spark whatsoever and I'm pretty sure the coil/ic is fried. My problem is I can't track new ones down... At all. If you know where I can get an Ic igniter/coil please let me know!!!

Hello, Gilbertson, and WELCOME to KZrider! :cheer:

Perhaps nothing is fried.

While sitting unused with the ignition switch OFF, there should be no voltage to an ignition coil or igniter.

A variety of different conditions can result in lack of spark.

What led to the diagnosis of a fried coil/ic?

Is full battery voltage being received at the coil?

Good Fortune! :)

What genes is I went to start it, and it was dead, I checked the coil wire and saw that it had broken and been grounded. Not 100% sure the coil is fried, but pretty sure the ic is. And there is (some) power going to the coil. But barely any.

Igniters are used on electronic ignition, and your bike had points from the factory.

Power for the coil comes from the ignition switch via the shutoff switch on the handlebar.

Find out why you don't have 12 volts at the coil.

I finally get around to checking the coil. Between the red/yellow and blue wires there's only .004 ohms. My Hanes Manuel says there's supposed to be 1.8-2.8 ohms. Now on
The hunt for a new coil.

Did you check the secondary side?
And did you have your meter set at the right scale?
.004 ohms is far less resistance than 1.8 to 2.8.

As Steell said, a 77 KZ400 won't have an IC igniter unless someone converted the ignition over to a newer model. If the Haynes says a 77 KZ400 uses a 1.8 to 2.8 ohm coil, it is wrong. It would be a 4 ohm coil.

If you have the original points, I would recommend the Emgo 4 ohm coil at Z1enterprises. It is made as a Kawasaki replacement.

If you have a Kawasaki factory electronic ignition from a later model, then I would get the 2.2-ohm Gray Dyna Coil.

If you have a Dyna S or Dyna III ignition, then you want a 3-ohm coil (green Dyna Coil or Accel Super Coil).
