To Ignite or not
09 Jul 2012 16:22
I have a problem. My 1984 ZN1100 quit sparking on 2 and 3 cyls. I replaced the coils with some new Dyna coils but still no spark. I thought I would replace the igniter and, with some help from a forum member, found some 211191071 igniters for sale on ebay. Then I thought maybe better to try and find new one. I checked with Z1 enterprises and was told that I should have 21119-1104 igniter. So which one is it? I wonder if my ignition not having points might be the difference but don't know for sure. The bike was running super and then started barely running and now won't start. After this lon winded post can any one suggest something? Thanks in advance

Any ignitor with the correct plugins for the wiring should work.
I've never heard of any differences as in model specific dwell numbers.

Yours is the 21119-1104 IGNITER. Before you asked for a specific part # in your post. but if you look at the parts fiche, you will see there is no Mechanical advance. So the advance is in the IGNITER unit.

Thanks, I knew it didn't have a mechanical advance but I just went off the part number of the igniter that was on the bike. Will having the wrong igniter make a difference? Before the bike quit running it was running real good. Thanks for the help

10 Jul 2012 10:09With plugs removed, is spark visible on any plug?buck484 wrote: ... quit sparking on 2 and 3 cyls. I replaced the coils with some new Dyna coils but still no spark. Continued sparking on 1 and 4 would indicate igniter is okay.
Would clean any corrosion from the connectors at wiring into and out of the igniter.
Assure Dyna coil screw heads aren't shorting against coil mounting spacers.
Good Fortune!

Yes I have spark continuously on 1 and 4. I'll check connections again. Thanks

The part number from the factory, on the actual unit, is not the official Kawasaki designated part number for that unit. It is usually similar, but not exact. I think the stamped part number is the number the supplier puts on it.

Thanks is there any way of testing the igniter to see if it is good or bad.

By swapping wires, you can narrow down where the problem is. Since you have spark on 1 and 4, try swapping the green wire and black wire at the coils (I think the ZN probably uses the same wire colors for that as the KZ, but I'm not positive).
