77 KZ1000 dyna coil mounting question
08 Jul 2012 09:27
Hi, I haven't posted anything in a while but have been coming here since 2005. My 35 year old kz1000 ltd stranded me and my wife for the first time ever on the 4th in 96 degree heat. Engine just shut off. I found the 10 amp fuse I put in the coil circuit had blown. With no other option on the side of the road I put a small piece of wire in place of the fuse but then the wiring became the fuse
in a puff of smoke. I found a nice Amish farmer who let me put my bike in his barn until I could get my truck to get the bike. Those who are familiar with mounting dyna coils on this bike no about the clearance issue between one of the coil terminals and the mounting post. I had a piece of heatshrink on the posts but it split and allowed the short. Now I have a tywrap between the post and screw but was wondering if anyone had any other ideas before I finish repairing it. I will attempt to add some pics. First pic showing where it shorted out and the second where I put the tywrap. Just looking for other ideas.
thanks,

I made new spacers out of UHMW, a dense form of nylon.

if you have a sears hardware in your area, they have all the stuff.
les is right get you a nylon spacer,,,,,also get a small headed bolt that wont get close to the upper postive term.

The Accel and Dyna ignition coils, have the same closeness to the primary wiring side of the coil. It's a known problem for users of these coils.

Thanks for the idea of the non conductive spacer. I'm not sure where to get uhmw nylon but I found some stuff in my basement that I think is called delrin. It looks similiar to nylon and is pretty strong. Here is a pic of what I made. Thanks again for the replies.

Years ago used two tie wraps on each oem coil mount spacer.
Forms a sheath around the mount to insulate it from the screw head.
Was intended as a temporary measure, but still there, holding tight, and doing a fine job.
Good Fortune!

You can't drill new mounting holes in the bracket and the use the other, further hole in the laminations? This will have more than enough room.

No, unfortunately the bracket isn't long enough to add another hole. I like your avatar, I worked on F4 D models a long time ago. I think you replied to a message I had several years ago. I seem to recall you worked on several models of the F4, the coolest fighter ever built. I used to love working the flightline at night and watch them do touch and go's with full afterburner.
