i have a 78 kz200a yesterday i was riding at and my rectifier started smoking which it doesnt charge my battery anyways but my running tail light went out. the dual filaments are still good, the brake light works but i can now not ride it at night because i have no running light. i have read that it could be the ground wire but i dont see why it would just go out all of a sudden, i dont know if my rectifier has anything to do with it, i was hoping someone else has had this problem and would be able to give me a starting point and i can work my way through. i really like night riding but dont want the tickets. thank you in advance.

Do you have a multimeter, or can borrow one? When testing for voltage in the tail light(running light circuit) set the multimeter on VDC(Volts, Direct current, range of 20. Remove the tail light bulb & turn on the ignition switch without starting the engine. Put the RED probe inside the tail light socket, and the BLACK probe on either the battery Negative(-) terminal/post or a good frame ground.

If there is voltage, the meter will indicate it on the display, Check both of the contacts inside the socket, one will be for the brake light circuit, the other the running light circuit. if no voltage, look further back toward the wiring harness for broken wires or loose connections.

Post back your findings.
