On/Off toggle switch in place of clutch switch?

Hey guys.

I recently posted about a problem I have with my new clutch lever not fitting up against my left hand control unit because the clutch switch on my new lever is in the way.

A suggestion by wireman was to bypass the clutch switch with a toggle switch under the tank. I like this idea.

Has anybody ever done this?

Any suggestions?

Just wire the 2 black wires normally going to my clutch switch to an on/off toggle switch should work, shouldn't it?

10 amp toggle switch? or 30 amp switch?

Thanks.

Where would you mount it? I'd think a spring loaded one to the off position would work better, so you'd need both hands to start the engine.

Here's some Mil-Spec toggle switches:

SPST = Single Pole,Single Throw.
SPDT = Single Pole, Double throw.
SPST = Single Pole, Single Throw Momentary (a spring loaded switch to the off position).
DPST = Double Pole, Single throw.

Try to get a toggle switch rated for moisture resistance. Most marine(boating) switches are.

The Mil-Spec toggle switches I listed, take the #6 ring terminals.

Wire Termination Insulation & Sizes

Terminal Insulation Color Wire Sizes
RED
22-18 gauge wire
BLUE
16-14 gauge wire
YELLOW
12-10 gauge wire
RED
8 Gauge
BLUE
6 Gauge
YELLOW
4 Gauge

The ring terminal holes comes in many sizes, from #4 up to 1/2" in most cases, it's a matter of finding the tightest fitting hole to fit the fastener for the termination.

American Wire Gauge(AWG) is backwards to what many people think; that is 22 gauge is many times smaller than 10 gauge even though the number is bigger.

DUCT TAPE, LOTS AND LOTS OF DUCT TAPE!! :D i just jumped the two wires for the clutch lever coming out of the harness. The lever is like a momentary push button switch like you would use for a starter. I'd listen to wireman though. Going my way might lead to trying to start the bike while its in gear causing it to jump forward off of its kickstand..

Back in the day when I was still riding my BSA a guy was showing me his brand new 1976 Yamaha XS750 triple - bragging about its virtues. The bike was sitting on its side stand. He looked at my old BSA and proclaimed "No more kick starting for me; this baby has electric start!" And with that he pushed the starter button. When he did the Yamaha lurched forward off the side stand and crunched down into the gravel screwing up the paint job on his tank. He had left it in gear when he parked it, and it was not equipped with a starter lock out switch. I kick started my BSA and rode off vowing I would never buy a bike with an electric starter. When I broke my vow a year later I was glad to learn about the lock out feature. Neither of us had been drinking. ;) Ed
