Over charging battery. was created by TexasKZ900
I need some help, I have a 78 KZ1000 in a 76 KZ900 frame. I'm using a dyna s with green 3ohm coils, the battery fluid has been evaporating quickly, so I checked the voltage at the battery with 4000 rpm and it reads 16.9. I think I need to replace the regulator and the rectifier, but can I use one of the combination regulator/rectifiers like Z1 sales.

Here are some pictures of what I have, thanks.

Another thing that can cause the same symptom is losing voltage on the brown wire at the regulator. Measure the voltage on the brown wire right at the regulator. It should be ideally the same as the positive post of the battery (using battery ground for both measurements). If not, then you have to find where the system is losing voltage. It's most often at the fuse holders, but can be other places too.

If the voltage at the brown wire is the same as the battery voltage, when the battery is at 16v, then time for a regulator.

The answer to your question is yes.
As loudhvx suggests, now's a good time to go through your electrical system to make sure it is healthy as well. Hate to see you go to the effort of installing the combo unit (something I heartily recommend anyway because those old regulators had a history of catching fire) only to still have a problem.

Read this about failures of the early rectifers & regulators:http://redlinecycle.com/rectifiers.html (it may show a blank page, but the information is there).

Okay, I tested the brown wire it's a bad regulator. When the new one comes in, do I just plug the green connector in and unplug the rectifier with the white connector and the yellow wires? Or does the old rectifier serve any other purpose?

Thanks again for the help.

New combo unit? There will be instructions with it. Don't fiddle with anything yet.

Did you have any luck with this new unit? I bought one, installed it, thought my problem was solved and threw away the instructions (big mistake) now it seems I still have issues. Do you remember your installation steps or do you still have your instructions?
