Bad Igniter?
05 Jun 2012 17:45
Does the igniter control the headlight+oil pressure light circuits thru the igniion? My `81 kz750 LTD has no spark ,headlight or oil pressure light. They all work thru the ignition circuit.I have power going to coils,no power out.I`ve tried hotwiring the bike and same results.I also tried another set of coils.I went thru wiring+everything is good there. The only thing it can be is igniter, right?Or did I miss something? One more thing:the turn signals+brake light work when ignition is on.My next step is to make a new igniter w/HEI parts.Am I on right track?

It sounds like you have something else going on. The igniter should not affect the headlight and oil pressure light.
You have 12v at the coils? But not on the negative side of the coils?
If the igniter is bad, maybe the headlight is blown and the oil pressure bulb is blown too. That would indicate a possible voltage problem. Maybe the regulator is faulty or the wiring for the regulator is faulty.

Yes,there`s power to coils, none going to plugs.Hotwiring does same thing. It could be the regulator wiring or regulator itself. It came off a `84 GPZ and I wired going from plug pictures+diagram in factory manual.I`ll look at bike later and see if it`s right.
