+1

Should also match voltage of battery measured between the posts, both at idle and at 4000 rpm.

Battery voltage should be 13+ volts at idle and 14+ volts at 4000 rpm.

Would also assure integrity of the ground connection where negative battery cable attaches to rear of engine.

Good Fortune! :)

Plug wires check out OK, soft pliable and clean connectors, and all grounds check out OK.
I checked the point gap and they were fine, #1 & #2 had a .014 gap and the same on #2 & #3.
I checked the battery at 12.5 volts and all four primary lugs showed 12.4 volts
I didn't have a timing light yet so I started it just to see what happened and it wouldn't start so I choked it and played with the throttle to get it running and the coil to #2 & #3 was not working. I put my meter on the primary lugs to make sure they were still getting voltage and there was 17.4 volts at the primary lugs so I hit the battery real quick and it was showing 17.4 volts at 2500-3000 rpm so I shut her down.

This bike had problems with the voltage regulator four or five years ago so I checked the connectors related to that and all looked good.

I figure I am safe to assume that the coils were getting too much voltage and this caused me this current problem, pardon the pun.

Look at that would you? I've got 35 posts and almost all of them is crabbing about this bike. The only good thing, and I'm not sure about that either, is that it was given to me.
I have had a '77 LTD that the cam chain idler go out of in about 1K miles, I had a '76 900 with crank problems, I had an '80 LTD fuelie that ate plugs every 2-300 miles or so and went thru two computers in 3-4 years.
I did have a '78 1000 that ran fine with virtually no problems what so ever, thats one out of five bikes that you could just start and ride with nothing more than routine maintenance.

Somebody want to remind me why I like these things again, lol.

I believe the maximum voltage should not exceed 14.5 volts at the battery, or damage from over voltage can happen (blown light bulbs, capacitors in the ignition being stressed, and igniton coil damage).

Installed the bolt-on reg/rec combo version from Z1E years ago, and it's working just fine.

Thank all you guys for your input but I think for now this bike is going into storage. I'll just drain the fuel and hang a tag on it about what it needs and stuff it into the corner out of my way.

I think I can hear Taps playing from the garage.
