Mystery plugs
31 May 2012 22:51
1978 KZ650 B2
I have 2 plugs on the wiring harness that were not connected to anything on the bike. One has 2 pins, the other 3. The plug with 2 wires are black/yellow and yellow/black, and the plug with 3 wires is the same with the addition of a brown wire. Are these for a different model bike or am I missing something?

I don't know where on the harness you found them, but take a look on this wiring diagram and see if you can track them down.

The were right below the battery, above the swing arm. I have a Clymer manual and can't find them on the diagram at all.

Maybe another approach would be to use the wiring diagram and take an inventory of each of the components to see if each one shown on the diagram can be located on the bike. For example - can you locate the brake light failure indicator switch, hazard relay, etc. Ed

Well everything on the diagram is on the bike, I'm lost as to what they are. I'm remaking my harness, and going to leave them out. Maybe I'll come up with something.

I think they are for a couple of devices used on the 1979 kz650 D2 model. The 2 pin for the low level warning sensor, and the 3 pin for the warning light self checker. See this link for a wiring diagram for the D2

Notice that the wire colors match what you indicate yours has.

That is definitely what they are. I have a friend with a D2 model, and the plugs are as stated. This also explains the single unplugged wire at the cluster. Good find!
