Two Lighting Questions for 750 Spectre
26 May 2012 22:24 - 26 May 2012 22:25
I'm reviving an old 82 KZ750-N1 Spectre 4-cylinder shaft drive. I don't have an owner's manual. Two quick questions about the lighting system:
1: Are the two round, amber REAR side lights supposed to just be turn signals? Or are they also supposed to be markers (parking lights) too.
Info: On my bike, the two amber FRONT markers serve as both parking lights (always-on), plus they're turn signals (flashing based on left or right turn switch position). The two similar rear lights work fine as turn signals; but neither of them comes on as though it's a parking light. The bike does have a center-rear light system that serves as tail light (parking light), brake light, and license plate marker light.
2: What is the red toggle switch supposed to do -- the one next to the left-side handgrip, just to the right of and slightly above the hi beam/lo beam switch?
Info: On my bike, with the key on, the headlight plus both front amber marker lights turn on solid. When I flick that red toggle switch, the right rear amber light flashes brightly, and the right front amber light flashes a bit more brightly than marker. Also the "TURN" dashboard light flashes (the right dash light). There's no effect on any other lights. I sort of figured it's supposed to be like a car's 4-way flasher "emergency" light switch but it only flashes the right side.
Thanks. I probably just need to take that switch apart and give it a good clean & lube....

Rear are turn only, front are both turn and running. See the bulbs are installed as 1157 front, and 1156 rear.

The left handlebar switch is for the 4 way flasher circuit, run by a seperate silver flasher/relay can from the turn signal circuit.

Thanks for both answers.
I'll clean the switches and see if the 4-way flasher system can get working again.
Is there an easy way to locate the flasher relay?

I'd power up the bike, and turn on the turn signals, the silver can that's not clicking is probably the hazard(4 way flasher) can.You can also touch them while energized, and feel the making and breaking of the circuit(both are thermal relays/flashers).

Approximately where can I locate these silver cans? On the handlebars, center under the speedometer area? Under the seat somewhere? On the left side of the bike under that plastic cover where there are other electronic items?
I know where to look to find the flasher relay in a car or pickup truck; just not motorcycles. Last time I had a street bike was 1992 when i got married (wife made it "go away" right after that). Since then, it's just been dirt bikes and ATVs. I'm just starting out again with street bikes. (what I'm tryin' to say is, "I'm not an idiot, but I don't know where street bikes' flasher relays usually are...")

On my 1982 GPz 1100, they are below the seat, close to the battery, with each having a two prong electrical connector. Mine has orange wiring for the flasher cans. Your's may be rubber mounted for vibration dampening.

Thanks Patton, I found the whole system on the wiring diagram and I'll be able to trace the wires to find the relays.
Thanks guys. This is a big help.
BTW, I was also having tune-up trouble with the bike (couldn't get it to idle smooth). A new battery REALLY helped, I couldn't believe how much smoother it ran just because I put in a new battery. Then I put my fingers over the air cleaner intake and noticed how dramatic the rpm change was with just a little bit of air movement change.
So I ordered a new foam air filter; won't be in till Thursday or Friday. That's ok, I have lots of other stuff to do.

Re: Two Lighting Questions for 750 Spectre

Found the two flasher units. They're inside the left-hand-side "electrical panel box" area, that multi-electronics area covered with a plastic cover, next to the battery and contains the starter solenoid, fuze box, and some other electrical stuff.
The two flashers are mounted inside of rubber vibration-reducing holders. They're both aluminum colored and have black caps on the plug ends. The flasher towards the rear of the bike is for the turn signals; the one towards the front of the bike is for the 4-ways.
Now that I can touch them, I can likely fix them.
Thanks again guys.

Re: Two Lighting Questions for 750 Spectre

The toggle switch for the 4-ways was filthy inside. I took the multiswitch off, brought it inside and disassembled & cleaned & greased it. Two soldered wires broke off the turn signal mechanism inside (I don't know if I broke them, or if they were pretty much broken before i disassembled the assembly) and I resoldered them. Cross my fingers they'll work right.
I took the battery box and all the electronic modules, left and right sides, out. Figured I might as well give it the once-over. Fixed an oil leak by changing the shift shaft oil seal. Double checking all the contacts and grounds now.
Maybe tomorrow I'll get it back together and try it out. It has a poor-idle problem that I have to also solve, plus the front tire got mounted backwards and I need to see if I can swap it 180 degrees (I wrote other threads about those issues).
Maybe I'll get things right. We'll see.
