Hi all,

First post, so let me thank all who read and can offer advice.

1981 Z750 L1. Had the bike about a month, use it for daily commute, bike is awesome. Riding home tonight and noticed neutral light not working. Then checked horn and also not working. Headlight, taillight and brake light also not working. Oil light, fuel low level light also not working. Indicators do work, bike starts and runs fine.

I checked fuses and they all appear to be o.k. Any ideas before I start checking all the bulbs, then connections...

Assuming the fuses are the glass tube type, I would start by replacing the fuses. Sometimes age and vibration can cause the filament inside the fuse to separate from the little metal caps on the end of the fuse. When this happens, the fuse can look ok even though it will not conduct current. Also, check the fuse holder clips for corrosion. Ed

Thanks Ed that's great advice. I had a similar problem on my 1983 XS 250 about a year ago, where the head and tail lamp did not work despite the glass fuse looking o.k. I wasted a bit of time pulling the headlamp off, checking bulbs when I just should have replaced the fuse.

This problem is a little different though. I will attach some photos to this post of checking with a test lamp the fuse holders in the fuse box. The 20 amp main lights at both ends with the ignition on. So I have ignition and indicators.

It seems that both 10 amp fuses are receiving no power at all. The holders are in good condition.

I guess I can now chase these back until I find the problem, but I was hoping someone will have the magical answer, "just check so and so"...

I have a Haines manual and the diagram is in black and white. Would anyone know of a better version of this?

Cheers, Mirbooya.

Thanks Patton, that site is fantastic.

After checking "The Bible" I found a wiring diagram that just showed the lighting circuit. It was easy then to see that all signs pointed to the ignition switch. Popped the headlight off and could see that the brown wire (earth?) that is separate from the 6 point plug was disconnected. Re-connected and everything works again.

Whilst there though I noticed that some connections looked a little tired. So I have started renewing the bullet connectors.

Also, the wires are a bit of a mess and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how the wires should be joined behind the head lamp. It was like this:

However I swapped the ignition over to the other side to make for neater cabling with the two holes in the headlight unit:

It seems better, but thought it can't help to ask how you guys have it set up?
