Running engine w/ no rectifier? was created by Goalieguy35
Hi everyone i picked up at 79 kz1000 engine and want to run it and the only part im missing is the volatge rectifier under the coils? Now i by passed it because i want to see if engine runs good before i put more money into it. I know i cant run it for miles and miles cause ill burn points out but to run it a few mins to see if the engines strong wont hurt it right?

Am uncertain as to identity of the missing part being described as "the volatge rectifier under the coils."

to see if the engines strong --- Would be okay to disable all charging system components, and test run the bike by just using a good strong battery.

Running without a voltage regulator would be expected to overcharge the battery and burn out light bulbs.

Good Fortune! :)

The output of the alternator could be as high as 50 volts or more, possibly burning out the ignition system. It's alternating current, the type that could cause the ignition coils to internally fail, and as mentioned, burn out every light bulb & "Smoke" some wiring.

Rectifier under the coils? Can you post a pic? Or at least describe the rectifier?

Maybe it's the ballast resistor that was located near the coils on later KZ1000's?

Yes resistor is what i ment sorry everyone! Kawaski part number 28018-1018 i believe it drops voltage to the coils from the power feed so dont burn out points. I dont have it wired now thats what i was wondering if it would harm anything.

The former point ignition on 1978 KZ1000-A2 was superseded by an electronic ignition on the 1979 KZ1000-A3,

Here's what the FSM says about the resistor:
