Hey guy's Clear me up on the brake light on the cluster panel on my 78 KZ 1000 Is it normal for the light to come on when you use the brake ? Or is this a warning light ?
Thanks Strat

Some Kawasaki's had a warning sensor, that turned on the brake warning light when the bulb in the rear burned out. I believe a 1157 bulb will fit.

As known, the brake-light-warning idiot light is supposed to remain dark while cruising along without any application of either brake.
During brake application, the idiot light is supposed to burn a steady bright red.
(This lets the world know that the idiot light bulb and its related circuitry are functional).
Here's the "warning" part:
When the rider notices the idiot light is "blinking" when supposed to be dark while cruising along without either brake applied, the "blinking" idiot light is warning the rider that "the next time brake is applied, the rear brake light ain't gonna light up."
Such warning typically results from a blown brake light filament in the rear bulb, but may also result from other deficiencies such as a bad wire, loose connector, etc.
Good Fortune!

My '78 came on anytime the brake light is on. I've never seen it flash...very interesting. An easy experiment would be to pull the bulb and try it out.
Some of the newer models also have the headlamp warning light on the tach...that only lights when there's trouble. My '80 LTD had that function and sure enough, my bulb burned out and it came on.

If needed, here's what a typical pressure brake looks like, usually being located in the steering head area.

While there might be an issue with the pressure switch itself, would first assure that the connections where the wires attach to the switch are clean and snug, and that neither wire is frayed.STRATOCASTER wrote: ... intermitant sometimes the brake light comes on with the front brake sometimes not....

Here's where it is on the KZ650 (on the front brake line splitter). Make sure the connections are tight because sometimes turning the forks into the stops or compressing the forks can tug on the wires a bit. Ed

 Good eye! That's an old picture I took when I started removing my front forks to replace the steering stem bearings. I cleaned everything up before putting it back together and even replaced that left fork ear with a NOS one at the same time. Ed
