basic rewireing
11 Apr 2012 12:17
Ive got a 1986 kz1000 police. I am rewireing as basic as I can. I am ordering Dyna 3ohm coils and wandering if I needed the igniter or if I could wire direct. And if so what wires go where?

First, welcome aboard and I hope you are ready for this trip.
Second, there's been a lot of chatter about this very issue over the years, here is a link to another thread where this was beaten to smithereens:
The dreaded "which ignition works with what other stuff" thread Vol XXXII
I have a 77 so I just ditched all of the points stuff and went with a straight Dyna ignition, coils, and wires. Your selection will be a bit more complicated.
Welcome to the insanity! :woohoo:

I think you should be fine with a Dyna S and 3-ohm coils.
Don't throw away the factory ignition plate and module, though. Someone will want those, even if one of the pickups is dead, since two bad systems can possibly make one good one.
If you are thinking of using the factory system, then you need to use the pickup plate, and igniter, but you would be better off with the gray Dyna 2.2 ohm coils, however the 3 ohm coils may still work ok.
The difference in 3 ohm coils over 2.2 ohm coils when used with the factory ignition will only be noticeable at high RPMs or wide throttle openings, if at all.
