engine/Regulator ground is my first/gut feeling. ;)

Manual & volt meter should provide you for verifying the culprit.... While running @ idle >13Vdc @ battery terminals...?

there was smoke coming from what appeared to be the wiring harness. a friend told me to cut open the harness and look for frayed wires. I didn't find any but it does look like the smoke is coming from the negative battery terminal. if that could still be engine regulator ground. how do i fix it?
