I am looking for an electronic tach for my KZ since it has a J motor and 1100 heads on it and there is no mechanical tach drive. Will any tachs from other bikes work or the cheap universal ones? I know the KZ uses a "wasted spark ignition" meaning that each coil wire fires twice. Is that going to make the gauge read funny?

I was think of using one off of a late 90's Katana 600 or possibly one off of a Kawasaki Vulcan. Or if need be buy a cheap aftermarket one.

Any suggestions?

Find "Loudhvx" and ask him. I believe recently he made up or found a diagram for using a car tach on a bike.

I'm at this site and at least three other Kawasaki related sites several times a day, so if I miss the initial post, I'll try to respond later in the day.

Keep looking in e-bay, that is where I found mine, when you least expect it, you will find one.

I have a 1980 Kawasaki KZ750 Ltd. I bought new. I recently managed to get it out of my garage after 28 years and put it on the road again (2010). I feel like a kid all over again. Since I have acquired 3 78 KZ1000 Ltd, 1 1981 KZ1000 Ltd, and another 1980 KZ750 Ltd. Love the LTD's.

Is the 81' model electronic? I thought some of them were still mechanical.

The 1981 came with both elctonic and cable. The one posted on here is electronic, I have the same cluster on my bike,if you need the electric tach cable I have a spare one.

I think I might get one from a 1983 KZ750. Hopefully it fits in the case of the old one so it looks somewhat original.
