Oil in Alternator Case
15 Feb 2012 22:34
Hey all, i just removed my stator/alternator case in order to polish it up...and found oil within. I assume the seal behind the alternator rotor/going into the engine is leaking...
I looked through my service manual to see how easy this may be to replace...and well, It appears i may need two special service tools. My question is has anyone done this at home without the SST's? Or should i just let it leak. Could it ruin the alternator by having oil on it?

Well that's a relief... i cleaned some of it out, should i just add some standard 10w-40 oil when i reassemble it? Or is it a special type of oil. Thanks!

That's normal engine oil, there's no seal on the Kz1000/1100 engines as it's lubrication & coolant for the over running starter clutch.

Sorry to hijack, and if this question is redundant, but I have the same problem on my '81 KZ750. There is a little breather hole on the bottom of the stator housing and oil is leaking out of that. Is that still normal?

The 650's and 750's have different lower end bearings, I believe they are not the roller bearing type used in the Kz1000/1100 engines.

Hmm, so it sounds like I may have a problem with a stator leak on a 750.
I guess I'll have to check into it.
