No spark, testing components
11 Jan 2012 00:43
I am getting no spark, and i've already set the points. I want to check all the rest of the components of the ignition. So can anybody tell me what the parts are, what they look like, and how to test them? I have all of them off of the bike, as I also found out the wiring was shoddy at best. So if i can test them off of the bike, i would prefer doing that so i can reinstall the new one on the rebuild. Thank you in advance for your help.

Including information about bike year and model may elicit better responses.
And it's easy to put the information in your signature where it will automatically appear in posted messages.
When done, the signature information appears in all posts, past and future.
And may be changed as often as desired.
Here's how ---

Once you determine what model bike you have I would highly recommend you obtain a Kawasaki service manual (no KZ owner should be without one). In it you will find tons of valuable information needed to maintain and repair your bike including detailed test procedures for ignition, charging, and other critical systems. No one has ever regretted buying one of these manuals. They are available on eBay, just be sure to get the one for your exact model/year bike. The manual will save you $$$ in unnecessary repairs/parts and prevent hours of frustration. Ed

I know on my kz1000 csr I had put a new ignition button on. I just wired it with hot and ground and it got the starter to turn. But when I tried to start it it didn't fire at all. No spark. My hot was red/yellow and ground was black. Then there were 2 random red wires. So I connected one red to the hot and ground all together and it started right up. Just my .02. It might not be this easy for you but it's at least something to look for.

About the service manual. There are a ton of different models of the 79 kz650, so how do i know which model i have exactly? Or does the service manual give a general instruction that can be applied to all of the different models?

If unaware. the VIN is Vehicle Identification Number. And usually may be found on a white information label located on the steering neck (right-hand side).
