Ok, now that I discovered the wrong way to remove the starter lockout switch what's the right way?
I tried to gently pry it loose from the clutch lever but apparently I wasn't gentle enough and it snapped.
I suspected it was failing anyway (which is why I was trying to take it apart) so I went ahead and bypassed it.
But I'd kind of like to know if there's some other trick. It didn't appear to twist out. What am I missing?

The switch presses in and a tab on the switch pops into a slot on the aluminum casting. You can poke a small screwdriver into the slot to press the tab to release the switch. But it doesn't always cooperate. The switches seem to have two tabs, but I'm not sure if both get used.

That's brilliant. Sadly my entire bike is an anti-theft device. No one but me would want it!
