low fuel sensor

I've got a question regarding the sensor that screws into the fuel tank and hooks up to the light on the tach that lets you know you have low fuel. Is there a way to test if the device is functioning? I tried removing it from the gas tank and hooking it up directly in the air, but it didn't do anything. Here's a link to a photo of the part: www.flickr.com/photos/68421321@N08/6323240449/

If it doesn't work is there a way to repair it, or do I need to buy a new one?

Thanks!
