OK here we go again. I just tested my coil with an ohm meter and it tests OK. I am going to replace the wires with new ones as I have already got the old ones seperated from the coil. Next question.....I tried to test the regulator/rectifier with the ohm meter and followed the directions in the kawasaki manual. The problem is I am getting good readings on way but the other I get a OL(overload) reading. The ohm meter is an automatic one as you don't have to switch between 1k 100k and so forth. does this mean it is toast? Anyone have one for a '78 750B3? Thanks.

I think there is still one on the 78 frame out in the garage, I'll have to go look.

Nope, it's no longer on the frame, it may still be in the garage but it's in a horrendous mess right now as I'm re-organizing and trying to make some room :(

I just tested it with my ohm meter. I have the factory service manual which says with the meter set to x1, ohm meter + to yellow lead on reg/rec and - on meter to black on reg/rec. It states that I should get a reading of less than 20 ohms. I am getting a reading of .800-.900 ohm with a little "m" next to the numbers. anyone have any idea. The other test seems in spec. I am supposed to read more than 100k ohms I am getting approx. 130k. again with the little "m" after the numbers.I should have paid more attention in science class!

"K" is thousands and "M" (or "m") is mega ohms, as in millions :)

It don't sound good.
I can't remember, do you have three yellow wires coming off the alternator and going to the regulator, or two?

It's two yellow wires going to the alternator, the other wire goes somewhere else.
The part number for the reg/rec is 21066-029, and there are several members that have the cross reference cd, so hopefully someone will post a list of other models that use the same one.

You can also use the parts diagrams at www.buykawasaki.com to compare part numbers.

1978 KZ650B2 uses the same one. (still looking).
1979 KZ650 uses the same one.
1979 KZ400 uses the same one, and I quit :)

I'll try to look later to see if I can find one in the garage.

I was taught that (K) ohms is in thousands and that (M) ohms is micro ohms as in less than 1.
I have been doing the same tests on my regulator/rectifier for my 81 KZ1000M CSR model. The manual says to check resistance from the red/white wire to the (3) yellow wires. The resistance is approx 4 ohms. Same with checking the Black to the 3 yellows. The manual says that if you reverse the polarity of the meter leads to the same connections you should see a difference of at least 10 times the value. I get a reading of (OFL) which means out of field limits-- or infinity. If you are getting the same type results as these you could conclude that the regulator/rectifier is good.
best of luck.

Nope, "M" is mega ohms as in millions, micro ohms (never seen a meter that could measure them, but there probably is one) are "u"Ohms.

Obigatory link:

Measuring resistance

Units of ohms, kilohms (103 Ω) and megohms (106 Ω) are used in electronic design documentation. On schematic diagrams kilohms are abbreviated "K" and megohms are abbreviated "M". Thus, 33 kilohms would be rendered as 33K, and 5.1 megohms would be 5.1M. Values less than 1K are rendered without any symbol following the number, so 680 ohms would simply be shown as 680.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohm

Found a meter that will read micro ohms, but it costs $2,695.00 :woohoo:
