I'm having similar trouble, here with a '79 KZ400, I checked the voltage at the reg/rec and it shows around 43v at idle and upwards of 60v @ 4k RPM. Also, I only have 2 yellows coming out of mine. Volts DC at battery show approx 12.3 while running. Though it went crazy on me while testing once. Bouncing around all sorts of voltages while running. The battery charges fine using a charger, and runs for a few days before quitting. Should I look at replacing the reg/rec, or is there a problem somewhere else in the line? Maybe a short or drain? I'm not too concerned with charging the battery while running because I intend on replacing it with a capacitor, but I want to make sure that the issue isn't somewhere else and not having a battery will only make it worse. Thanks!

I have been on this site for almost 10 years and this question is asked alot. Its funny how all the experts put up wiring diagrams, test charts, multi paragraph posts and 27 different things to test and check. The answer is always the same-put a new reg/rec combo unit on and the problem is solved. How about that?

I find that many times the thread starts after someone already replaced the reg/rec and still had problems. Those are the ones that take time.
