Z650 not charging battery was created by newevidence
Hi, first post...

I've a 1977 Z650 that is not charging the battery, will start but cuts out and will not start again after running for a few minutes, the wires coming from my stator are two yellow and one black.

Also there is the white with red tracer leading to the battery so all in all, 4 wires from the rectifier/regulator.

Now, before I buy a new rectifier, how do I test the stator?

I have read that if I test continuity from the yellow wires to ground then if there IS continuity then the stator is kaput, do I alos runa test on the black wire at all?

Any input much appreciated..
:)

John,

IIRC the 77 B1 and C1 came stock with a 3 phase system that had 3 yellow leads from the stator, and a green lead to the field coil and a seperate reg and rect units. If your machine has 2 yellows and not 3 and a combo reg/ret then it either is not a 77 or it has had the system changed to one from 78 thru 80. These are single phase systems.

I have attached 3 pages from a manual which covers the 78 year which list how to test the system.

Hope they help to answer your questions.

First, make sure you are positive that your generator is the 1977 type. If yours looks like the first picture below, and has the 3 allen screws on the face of the generator cover, it is a 1977 generator. If your generator cover looks like the second picture, and does not have the 3 allen screws, it is a later generator. The 3rd picture shows a 1978 KZ650 generator cover; again, notice it does not have the 3 allen screws. Ed
