Just looking for a little education. I've seen a few posts about replacing the stock points systems with Dyna S electronic ignitions.

I get that this would result in less maintenance. There's no point gap to set and you don't have to adjust the timing (after the first time) right?

Are there other advantages to this system or is that it?

Thanks!

I think that the going away from points will give both a set once, adjustment, and a better quality of spark if you go with Dyna coils made for the Dyna S. Making sure the Electrical system is in good condition and proper voltage to coils, and Dyna S.
Like the Points system, leaving the Key On for extended periods can fry Coils, and the Dyna.
I don't know which year and model would be the right for a conversion, but I'm sure you could adapt the Kawasaki Electronic Ignition System. But you would most likely be gambling on someones used parts.

Points are a piece of sheet and always were. You get the Dyna, just set it and you are done forever. The coils I could not tell $0.10 worth of difference so I don't see need there, but the ignition pickup to replace points works real fine

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

There should be a little better acceleration since it's supposed to give a better spark advance curve than the standard mechanical advancer would.

The main advantage is no points to set or wear out. The down side is their internal circuitry has very poor self protection (if any) and they seem to blow up a lot based on internet posts. The original Ksaki electronic ignition is more robust. From what I read, the Kawasaki original electronic ignition off the 400 or 440 twin can be fitted to the 750 twin.

Dyna makes a much cheaper solution where you keep the points but add electronic ignition so the points have no current through them (and don't wear out).

I have seen these for about $60.

So it sounds like the advantage is mostly that you don't have to mess with point gap and timing periodically. Plus a small improvement in acceleration.

I think once my points start to wear out and are giving me trouble this would be a good mod. So long as my points are working and not requiring a lot of adjustment, it doesn't sound like there's much reason to switch.

Thanks as always for all the help. Another few thousand posts like this and I might stop thinking of myself as a noob.

The Dyna S retains the Stock Kawasaki ignition Advancer.

"Product Overview : Sportbikes - Dyna S Ignition System
Dyna S Ignition System is a complete self-contained electronic ignition system built with the latest state-of-the-art engineering. This is the same ignition used by top racers over the past 2 decades. The Dyna S is completely housed behind the ignition cover and uses a magnetic rotor with the original spark advancer, so the factory advance curve is maintained.
The venerable Dyna S ignition System is a time proven solution to the basic ignition needs of the vintage muscle bike. As a stand alone ignition the Dyna S is the standard of performance and reliability."

So making sure your advancer is in good condition, and lubed properly is still required maintenance.

A Dyna-S in comparison to Points
well there is none. It's sort of like watching a black and white 1960s TV and than watching a flat screen HD TV. Or working on your computer in Doss and than switching to Windows. The only thing they have in common is that they perform about the same task.
