thanks for explaining that! i don't know a ton about electronics but I get why the OE is the preferred choice. Not trying to stray from the original topic but which coils are the "correct coils" My bike isn't even on the road yet but if I remember corecctly it had yellow accell coils.would those jive with the factory elec. igniton? thanks

See the yellow wires on my bike? Accel 3 ohm coil, and it has electronic ignition.

I also use the 3-ohm Accels coils with the factory electronic ignition on two of my bikes. However, the coil that better matches the ignition is the gray, Dyna, 2.2-ohm coil.

With factory electronic ignition, or with factory pickups and HEI module, if the bike revs fine up to redline at wide open throttle, then the Accels are working fine. If the ignition seems to cut out when the throttle is opened wide at higher RPMs, then you may need the gray coil. Usually the Accels will be fine unless the compression is bumped higher on the motor or the plug gaps are opened up from stock.

The Accels are fine for the Dyna S, in case you go that route.

The Accels could even work with points in a pinch, but will shorten point life.

The Accels work really well if you use the points to drive an HEI ignition module. BTW, there is a thread on the KZ twins forum on this exact subject (HEI for points). You'll find Steell and me over there often as well.

what els is nice about the GM HEI module, is that it is designed to fire four times in one revolution. On our bikes it only fires once/revolution this means that it will not heat up even as much as it would in a car ignition application. No real heatsink is required short of the aluminum plate which you will mount it on.
