i have points. i think i have non resistor wires on right now because i had to unscrew the metal caps off the spark plugs to get my spark plug wire caps to fit over the plug

I think he stated previously that he's got points.

Assuming a stock coil and wires, you'll want resistor plug caps.

Go to your local motorcycle shop parts counter and ask what they have there. They don't need to be specific to your bike. You just need right angle 5k ohm resistor plug caps. Take one off the bike into the parts counter with you.

also if its a bad coil i was going to get the emgo coil, but i will need the caps also, but it doesnt say if it will need resistor or non resistor caps

Sorry I did not want to read threw the whole post. If you don't want to run resistor caps at all you don't have to and just mount standard silicone automotive caps on the wires. You will have a bit better spark without resistor caps. I don't think you will be using an AM radio on the bike to notice any interference to require resistor caps. I do not run any Resistance on my bike at all.

At the risk of hijacking this thread...

Is it just AM Radio that this will cause interference with? My (very limited) understanding is that running without any resistance creates a bunch of electromagnetic interference.

Could that interfere with things like CB radios, cordless phones, cell phones, wi-fi, etc?

And how far away would the effect reach?

This would reach just if you are right next to it. I use a GPS and a video camera on the bike and the camera is about 6" away from the #4 plug. There is no interference that I have noticed at all. Yes it would interfere with a CB unit that is within about 6 feet of it. It will not interfere with the modern stuff.

Yes, it depends on how well shielded the electronic gadgets are.

The time I notice the most problems with the interference is when using sensitive, digital multimeters (Flukes and cheap chinese ones both). If I recall, one meter was going crazy without even touching the bike. I actually had to go and get an analog meter in order to work on some of my buddies bikes.

It's not a big deal to go without resistor plug wires. You can always throw in resistor plugs in a pinch if you encounter a problem with RF interference.
