Main fuse blows as soon as bat. connected?

First, let me say I tried to search the FILEBASE and got booted out of KZR every try, so I'll just post it. I'm working on a 1983 440 LTD. As soon as the battery is connected the main fuse blows. This happens with the key off or on. I just got the bike (working on it for a freind) but I looked at it about one year ago and the fuse didn't blow with the battery connected. This IS a different battery now (The battery is known good from a different bike). Is there an electrical component that would act like this, such as the stator or regulator/rectifier that could short out as soon as the battery is connected or does this sound more like a shorted wire/connection? I'm confused!

Sounds like you got a hard short somewhere, have a look around the battery and see if you disturbed some wiring when you removed and installed the battery....

Check out this thread from the old archives it may help
