Xenon Headlights - Anyone have one? was created by Tested
I am interested in installing a xenon or HID headlight on my KZ750B2.

Has anyone done this? What is the process involved and was the end result worth it?

I have sold quite a few kits for this. I have one on my GPz and it has been on there for about 3 years. I love it. This is why I decided to start making kits for our bikes. One thing to remember is that you can't put a HID bulb in your stock headlight reflector. You must change it to the appropriate stile. Here is a link to a local thread.

Why can't you use a HID bulb in a stock headlight reflector? It may not be the best solution, but it certainly works. I know many people with sport bikes that originally shipped with halogen bulbs that they've converted to HID, and they are very pleased with them. It's not like there is anyone making replacement headlight reflectors for ZX models :)

IIRC it depends on the type of headlight you have. Most new sportbikes have the clear lens with the reflector behind the bulb which works with the HID replacement lamps.

If you have the old style headlights that refract light in the lens, then it doesn't work properly. The light is very distracting to on-coming motorists.

Example below:

So, I'd guess you could just aim it down a little, since I'm pretty sure an incandescent produces the same kind of light (plus more), although not as bright.

There are several people with the style shown below that have converted to HID. and no one that I'm aware of has had any problems with oncoming traffic flashing them.
What I'm saying is the HID lenses may be ideal, but it's not a deal killer if you don't have one.

Around here many people drive with their high beams on and flat refuse to dim them, and then there's those misbegotten aftermarket driving lights.

I've read that the reason BMW and some other cars use Halogen lamps for high beam and HID for low beam is because "the problem with xenons is they must be turned on and left on. They take time to warm up, and they are also worn out by constant on and off cycles." The article states that when the BMW high beams are turned on the HID low beams (which in this case are totally separate) stay on thus avoiding the frequent on/off issue. Please don't misunderstand, the author of the article loves HID lamps and in fact says "Honestly since the xenon low beams are so spectacular the high beam halogens don't add much." Do you know if the HID motorcycle lighting systems keep the HID low beam on when the Halogen high beam is activated? Ed

I have tested both type of reflectors and there is a HUGE difference between. If you use the one with a faceted lens it throws the light all over the place. AND YOU WILL GET STOPPED BY A COP sooner or later and get a ticket. I have tested both on my police buddies. They told me that with the clear lens the light looks fine just quite bright but with the faceted lens it was "blinding and annoying". Also if possible it is much better to us a digital system over a magnetic system. They last longer and they are much more efficient. Also the Mini ballasts take quite a long time to warm up so the bulb takes about 30 seconds to turn on fully. Read the thread link it explains it all. I've been testing these now for over three years and have learned a few things. One very important thing on the HID kits is that they REQUIRE a very steady and stable power supply. ANY fluctuation in the supply, they will turn off without warning.
