so im putting the 1980 kz 750 ltd back together after tear down. its going pretty good, taking awhile but its coming together. put my wire harness in the other day, and realized i didnt know which wires went to which coil. so i got out the wiring diagram, and the colors it was showing, wasnt there. the wiring looks original, so im confused. does it matter which wires go to which coil? does it matter if it goes to the top or the bottom of the coil?....one more thing, my bike is a 1980 kz 750 h1, but i seen some on the motor ID it said 750 E....did the 750 E motor go in the 750 h1 bike?.....maybe i should be looking at the 750 E wiring diagram.

Both wiring diagrams are in the FILEBASE (likely very similar as to coil wiring).

Coil primary terminals (small wires) are non-polar, so power wire (typically red or red/yellow) may go to either terminal and trigger wire to the other.

Good Fortune! :)

so your saying it doesnt matter where the wires go as long as the red/yellow wires are on different coils?....lets say the red/yellow wires on the bottom of each coil, the the green on one top and the black on the other?

Important that the green connects to whichever coil fires the two inside spark plugs #2 and #3.

And that the black connects to whichever coil fires the two outside spark plugs #1 and #4.

Good Fortune! :)

Under the points cover, the stock Kawasaki electronic ignition works in conjunction with an I.C. Igniter box (usually located under a side cover).

Pick-up modules and rotor:

I.C. Igniter will look something like this:

If the stock Kawasaki electronic ignition has been replaced with a Dyna-S ignition, under the points cover will look like this:

Attachment Dyna-SOMR.JPG not found

And fitment of the Dyna-S eliminates the I.C. Igniter box.

But the wiring otherwise remains the same:
Signal wire (usually black) from 9 o'clock pick-up to coil firing #1/4;
Signal wire (usually green) from 3 o'clock pick-up to coil firing #2/3.

Good Fortune! :)

Looking at the engine while sitting on the bike, the spark plugs are numbered from left to right 1-2-3-4.

If your bike has the Kawasaki supplied electronic ignition and you lose a pair of sparkplugs while running, inspect the pulsing or pick up coils:

Ohm Checking Pickup(Pulsing) Coils

The pickup coils on the Kawasaki’s with the factory supplied electronic ignition can sometimes fail or become intermittent due to heat and vibration.

1.Trace back from where the pick up coils are mounted,(under a right side CD sized cover) locate and disconnect a small 4 pin connector. Using a multi-meter set on OHMS and range of 2K, check between the BLUE and BLACK wires(#1 and #4 sparkplug wires) for between 360- 540 OHMS.

2.For #2 and #3 sparkplugs the wire colors will be YELLOW and RED, again 360-540 OHMS. The 550’s,650’s & 750’s may be backwards to the Z1’s,Kz900’s,Kz1000’s & Kz1100’s.

3.If the pickup coils are suspect of failing due to heat, they can be stressed using a hair dryer without the need of the engine running.

4.A replacement set of pickup coils might be obtained from a dealer who serviced the police Kawasaki’s.

5. If replacement pickup coils are not available, your next choice would be to order a Dyna “S” electronic ignition system from www.z1enterprises.com It replaces the IC igniter with a smaller module located where the mechanical ignition advancer was mounted.

6. Checking with Kawasaki.com website has determined that the Pick up(pulsing) coils are available . The pulsing coil # is 59026-1133 and replaces the older # 1002, 1012 which were used from the MKII motors until the 2005 P24.

7.Check the small 4 pin connector that the pickup coils connect to for corrosion/loose pins too.
