Replacement ignition switch
22 Jun 2011 14:10
Hi all,
I'm trying to replace the ignition switch on my '83 GPz 550. The previous owner lost the key and decided that busting out the ignition switch was better than getting the key replaced (seemed mighty suspect, but ran the VIN by the cops and they have no record of it being stolen).
Anyways, I found this ignition switch on eBay cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350109865118
It's from an '81 KZ750, but looks pretty much the same as mine (see photo). Does anyone know how interchangeable these switches are? Do they look the same but simply not fit, are the bolt holes different sizes or distances apart? etc.
Thanks

I'd contact
www.z1enterprises.com
Jeff Saunders runs the best place for old Kawasaki parts with a very knowledgeable staff. I've bought many parts over the years from them.
To save money Kawasaki has set up their system to use parts on multiple bikes if possible to save money. With a few exceptions, this works pretty good.
The www.kawasaki.com website requires a bit of digging, but once you've used it and understand how it works, it will show how many bikes use a certain part.

Sorry computer say's No. Go to Kawasaki.com, look up the info. Yours has a switch that only fits the 82-83 550GPZ. Look for a switch that fits, as it is of course NLA at KAW. 27005-5029 is the Number.
Google turns up some listings, but can you get one from one of those sites? Maybe, but call first, don't just add to a shopping cart to find it can't be had.
Now if you want to modify something? Then all bets are off.

Thanks guys. Yeah, looks like ol' Kawa had a short run of these particular ignition switches
Think I may have to go with a different one and just make it fit. Being discontinued, the 27005-5029 switches are crazy expensive now (>$100)!
Apart from re-organising the wiring, I know the steering lock won't fit (the 27005-5029 has an unusually long shaft as can be seen in the photo). Any other problems I may encounter?
Thanks!

Dennis Kirk sells replacements for other KZ550's which would work, but you may have to alter the connector, or splice the wires to attach your old connector.
Old, used switches can be problematic, so may cause more headaches than they are worth.

Yeah, because they're so specialised (only the '82 and '83 GPz 550s), the switches are super pricey on eBay. Found this one though
www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/5/86/373...KZ550-GPz-Parts.aspx
. Seeming a bit too good to be true (and the photo looks vastly different), I contacted them. They claim "It is just a stock photo--not necessarily the one for your bike. We have verified with the vendor that is the correct part number for a '83 KZ550 GPz".
So my question ... are Emgo products any good? Or are they cheap because they are low quality?
Thanks

I have used Emgo oil filters before and they were just fine. No experience with their electrical stuff, though. For the price, I would give it a shot before spending $150 on a NOS switch!
