i have a 81 kz550 with a newer yamaha R6 front end. does anyone know how to make my factory speedometer work

I take it that the R6 front end does not have any sort of speedometer drive? Most newer sport bikes pick up the speedo reading from the transmission. If that is the case, then I'm not familiar with a fix to make the original Kawasaki speedo work.
