I think that with stock coils any good (clean) plug is fine. I would stay on the lower end of the plug gap size with OLD stock coils.

so, until I order some accel plugs, I should go to 0.045 on my NGK's and I should notice a difference already?

I was reading this "spark blowout" you spoke of in your other post. What is the story behind it? I'm a little gunshy because I don't want to stress the coils or worse, run hot or dick something up with the pistons. Ever since I holed a piston on my 550 because I was leaner than lean I've been a wuss.

The wider air gap means the secondary winding voltage on the coil has to build up to a higher voltage before it can jump the gap. It puts more voltage stress on the coil windings which shortens their life. The total energy fired in the spark is exactly the same since it is whatever the core of the coil can store during the time the points (or transistor switch) conducts current through the coil's primary winding. I have not seen anything to convince me that forcing the gap wider gives performance benefits, but it probably does no harm performance either. IMHO, if there was any power to be gained by increasing plug gap the bike makers would be doing it. If there are any reputable dyno tests done by independent labs showing consistent gains for this, I would be interested in seeing their data. I know I researched this a while back when those new "power pulse" whatever plugs came out again claiming power/economy gains from a "hotter spark" but it was bogus.

Spark blowout is when the energy in the spark is not enough to overcome the turbulence in the combustion chamber. The dyna coils are built to withstand very large gaps. When I talked to them some time ago I was told that they have people running as much as .100" on plugs. Jacobs ignitions and MSD has done a lot of research on affect of plug gaps.
