to all... new and old.
Check those electrical connections!
Just had a customer come in with what he thought was a failing stator. Turns out he had neglected to check/clean the old electrical connections on his 30 year old CB750, and the connector at the rectifier/regulator damn near came to flame right in front of my eyes as he was showing me what it was doing!
You see... when an old connector (especially on the charging system) begins to decay and green up, not only does it make for poor running conditions/glitches it builds up a mega resistance to the flow of the electricity, and this in turn creates a large amount of heat dissipation. Smoking/melted wires and connectors is the least of your problems - trust me. Bikes have literally burned to the ground from this affliction. :S
Clean up those connections! Pop them out of the connectors, 1 by 1, scrub them with some scotchbrite pad, sandpaper, whatever till thier shiney new, then spray them with a good electrical contact restorer/protector and reassemble.
Re-check EVERY season for some peace of mind, and glitch free riding.
Peace!
