Electrical Issues at Coils was created by Mykuh
I just bought a set of Dyna Coils and new spark plug wires. The old set of coils and wires
were put on by someone else and I am not really sure where they came from, but after talking
to the guys at Z1 it seems they were incorrect(even though it DID run before this install)

Now after installing the new coils and cutting and running the new wires,I get fire
to #1 and #4 but no fire to #2 or #3.( I can tell by the sound and of course the heat
on #1 and #4 exhaust is HOT, and #2 and #3 are cold.)

Rechecking my connections and doing some reading here as well, I am not sure where to continue.

My LEFT side coils for #1 #4 one wire is BLACK the other is BROWN and both show
HOT when I use my test light to make sure its getting a feed.

My RIGHT side coils for #2 #3 one wire is BROWN the other is GREEN. The BROWN shows HOT
and nothing on the GREEN wire. Yet, I still only get fire from 1/4 not 2 and/or 3.

I dont see ANY red wires going to these connections as stated elsewhere in the forums here.

The bike has been running a litte rough, but still running, and sounded good as well. But now
running on only 2 cylinders I can tell for sure it was running on all 4 before.

Could it be the rectifier going bad ? suggestions and input will be much appreciated.

Still got ignition points? Changed to electronic ignition? To determine what you've got, open up the right side cover(about the size of a CD)and tell us what you see. If you've got points, you'll see two set of cam operated electrical contacts, being closed by flat springs. If electronic, you should see two sets of electrical pick ups that are triggered by a magnet on the end of the crankshaft.

If possible, list the color of wires going to either the points or the pickups as this will make troubleshoting somewhat easier....

Would assure at the connection of green wire to coil terminal that the screw head isn't shorting against the coil mounting spacer, where it's usually close when Dyna coil is fitted.

Good Fortune! :)

Many ways to insulate the coil terminal.
I just use tie wraps around the spacers.

Hey guys sorry for late reply.

I will try and load up some pics if I can tomorrow.

I have an electronic ignition installed.

I was told by Jeff? at Z1 to wrap where the leads go against the
new Dyna coils where the spacer used to secure to the bike mounts,so
I took care of those.

As far as colors.

#1 is Black(Passes Light Test and is HOT)
#2 is Green(Doesnt Light)
#3 is Brown(HOT)
#4 is Brown(HOT)

Frustrating as the bike was running on the old coils till I tried
to put in new plugs and I had one plug wire come apart, which is why
I decided to go all new Coils and Wires.

The old coils are Yellow (accels?) and had 8MM yellow wires.

These new Dynas are Green with black 7mm wires.

I guess I could see if the coil I am using on the 1&4 now
work with the other coil I had on 2&3 ?

Ignition coil will malfunction if one of its small wire terminal screws is shorting against the coil mounting spacer.

Good Fortune! :)

Maybe these will help.
Note spacers w/heat shrink around on frame screws under coil tabs....

Also, DYNA provides a switched +12Vdc conductor splice kit... I originally used it with no issues but solder and insulation over the solder joint is the preferred method.

Another item I've mentioned sevearl times,is do not misplace the supplied screws for the new ignition coils. If you do, 10-32 X 5/16" screws will work, anything longer will bottom out before being tightened.

OK guys here goes. After all is said and done I had the wires crossed at #2 and #3. I was told it didnt matter how they were put in and I had them plugged according to the old coils. But after looking at the pics of the wiring coming from the electronic ignition and tracing them all the way to the coils I decided to just reverse what I had and she now fires on all 4 cyls !

And I would just like to add :

New coils, new 7mm wires and fresh plugs = FAST ! well fast to me anyways. She runs like a new bike now after I ran her up the road. Before I got stuck with all this I had adjusted the clutch cable
and hadnt had a chance to check it out on a run. Smooth shifts and was a quick 90mph jump that was
smoother than when I bought the bike almost a year ago.

Good Times !
