someone tell me about POINTS?

The guy I got my bike from (known to screw people over didnt think he would screw me over. oh well fool me twice shame on me) said "well i cleaned the points before I sold it to you but those things have a coating on them and once its burnt off or sanded they stick and get hot."

Would this have any part in why mt bike all of a sudden wont start? Everyone thinks its carbs. But when i confronted the guy i got the bike from he went on on about points.

Remove the cover and watch the points as you turn over the bike. Make sure they are opening and closing. Not sticking. If they are, a little LITTLE lube on the pivots might help also you can use a matchbook cover to clean the contacts. Never use sandpaper. You can also get a points file but never needed one. You might want to check the gap also. You might also want to open and inspect the contacts for pits and burns. Pretty simple actually but electronic ignition is better.
Take it from me cuz I found
If you leave it then somebody else is bound,
To find that treasure, that moment of pleasure,
When yours, it could have been.

Check to see if you have spark. IF you do might be carb but if the guy went on about points he had trouble before.Buy a new set of points this way u know there new. But the best investment is buy elec tronic ignition.

I would just replace the points and condenser. It sounds like the PO thinks they need to be replaced, and he might be right or wrong, but to me it would be worth the few bucks they cost just to eliminate that as a possibility. Points do need to be replaced periodically and if the previous owner cannot tell you the last time they were replaced it's been too long. Ed
