Hey guys im new to this site and just bought an 84 kz750 a few days ago and i got it in pieces. I have everything back together and now i have no spark. I have checked everything and still no spark. I have power going to the coils but no ground. I have traced the wires and have found nothing that would cause it not to be grounded. I ran an additional ground wire from the battery to the coils and still no spark. It will not give me spark on any cylinder.
I am new to motorcycles and this is my first. Any info would be great! Ill answers questions best i can.

Step 1: See Patton's post here and add your bike to your signature to get quicker responses:

Step 2: Get yourself a manual of some sort (Clymer, Factory, etc) to help you out with any maintenance and work.
Step 3: If your bike is the same as mine, the coils are constantly supplied a positive voltage from the battery when the ignition switch is on. The ground is completed by the ignition circuit. Your bike will also have a wasted spark, where one coil fires the sparkplugs for cylinders 1 & 4 at the same time and the other fires the plugs for cylinders 2 & 3 at the same time.
You'll want to check out the wiring on the bike to make sure that the igniter and all that stuff is connected properly. Having one of those manuals will make this much easier. I don't know enough about your specific year to help explain what you are looking for though.

I have a clymer's and it is a huge piece of crap. The positive is always supplied voltage. There are 2 separate coils on the bike, one for the right side and one for the left. all the wiring is all there and nothing is wrong with it. I did find i am missing what appears to be a solenoid that goes to the ignition coil? The pictures in the books and online show there are 2 (solenoids) and on mine there is only 1. I cannot find the part anywhere though.

The only solenoid I can think of is the one that operates the starter motor when the start button is pushed. Does the bike have electronic ignition or points? To see, remove a CD sized cover on the right side of the engine, inside will be one or the other ignition part. And pictures if possible.

Is battery in good shape and FULLY charged? If not,that may a partial solution as these old bikes are very hard to get going unless battery is fully charged.bj

And if it's points make sure the advance mechanism and it's cam are installed, and that the points are adjusted correctly.
The points should be closed all the time except with the lobe opens them.
When the points are closed you can use a screwdriver to manually open them and you should get a spark with the ignition turned on.

the solenoid i am missing is a starter solenoid but it turns over. It has points under the cover. the points are totally different than what the manual shows but there are none the less points under there. The battery is charged but i have been using a jump box just to make sure there is enough power and so the battery wont die. When i use the screwdriver to open the points i still get no spark. the advance mechanism and cam are installed and proper.

Are you kick-starting it or using the stock start button? If there is no solenoid, how is the electric start being triggered? Wiring must have been changed, obviously. Have you checked over the other wiring since you are saying it is good?
Have you tested the coil resistances? Maybe they're done.
Also, about the Clymers. Are there lots of other things different?

there is no kick start on the bike... the wiring was messed with heavily. i looked at the ignition points and iv found that the points themselves are not very long and i dont think they are making contact. anyone know where i can buy thoes?

All the kz750/4s from 1980 and up came with electronic ignition as stock. Hard to imagine anyone who ever had the factory electronic ignition going back to points.
If there is voltage at the coils that kinda rules out the kill switch.
Do you have some photos of the points and coils so we can see what you have going on there ?

well after doing some research iv found out that the bike is actually a KZ700A. I couldnt find anything on the bike that had the VIN or anything and then i noticed something looked liked it was painted over so i managed to get the paint off and bam, the vin and on it, it said it was a 1984 Kawasaki KZ700 A. So now i know why the book didnt match (book came with bike) and why none of the parts i was looking at seemed to look the same. But now my problem is finding kz700 parts
