Battery cable routing
06 May 2011 03:09
In the market for a new battery and realized the old battery has the positive on the left when looking at the terminals. New batteries Positive are on the right so the question is how are the cables supposed to be routed? Do the terminals go towards the front or back of the bike?
You don't know how dumb I think these Q's are but I have no examples or pictures. Seems I will need to make new cables for the new battery so I would like to attempt to route them correctly.
Pictures would help, probably be the answer but verbal might jog my mind loose on this. Looked online for pictures for hours.
TIA

The terminals go toward the front. I've never seen a battery with the terminals mounted backwards. What brand is that?? Ed

It's an Exide YB12A-A
Seems we need a 14L-A2
I think the -A indicates size and the 2 after that indicates where the positive goes, or maybe the "L".
Actually I have no clue LOL. I will see what I can do with the existing cables to route from front. Does the positive go through the grommet under the side cover?
Now I go back out to check things again ;-]
Hmm... top mount eh?
Thanks

My KZ650 positive lead doesn't go through a grommet. The red wire just sort of loops down and forward; the black goes to the relay

The battery in my 1980 750/4 looks exactly like in basketcase's photos with the terminals at the back and pos on the left. It's only a couple of years old and while a different # from what was there when I bought the bike the original battery was the same.
Maybe check the cross ref
Edit:
Disregard my rambling above. The 750 twin battery is bigger and heavier than the 750/4 one and has the terminals toward the front
Beautiful bike 650ed. Looks like it came right off the showroom floor.

I think the terminals do go to the front because there are groves for the vent tube on the right side. Besides the seat the bike looks much better than all them boxes it came in
