Any benefit to installing Dyna over stock? was created by kz750saskatoon
My 750 has stock electronic ignition and pick-up coils already. Let us assume it works fine (waiting on a timing light to verify but it seems to be good). What, if any, benefit might I see if I installed one of the Dyna systems?

The bike is used as daily rider and is pretty much stock. Is this question too general? Is it as simple as "no benefit"?

Maybe for increased spark energies get a set of new Dyna ignition coils. Even when new, the stock ignition coils were marginal in performance, add heat & vibration and now the spark is greatly reduced.

The green 3 ohm coils are a popular replacement along with the Accel 3 ohm coils.

There is no advantage in using the Dyna S if you already have a good working electronic ignition.

The Dyna 2000 has electronic timing advance and allows you to adjust it for performance gains if your engine was modified, but it's expensive.

The factory ignition is more sophisticated than the Dyna S, which would be a down grade from the factory ignition.

If you need new coils, the Dyna 2.2 ohm gray coils are what you want for the factory ignition. If you go to a Dyna S system you would need 3-ohm coils.

If the pickups and coils are good on the factory ignition, but the igniter is dead, the igniter can be made from Chevy ignition modules for very cheap.

What Lou said. He is the Zen-Master of ignitions here on this sight. Stock ignition with Gray Dyna 2.2 Ohm coils is the best all around upgrade. ALSO stay away from the exotic metal spark plugs. They are expensive and do nothing for these bikes.

Thanks for clearing that up, gentlemen. The suggestions for what new coils to get are appreciated as well as I thought about doing that. The ones I have on there seem "okay" but I am not adverse (and sometimes like to) put new parts on just to know where they are at.

While on this topic, are suppression cables required for this system? The write-up on Z1E isn't clear to me. I don't know if the stock ignition advance is considered electronic or not.

Thanks Otto :)

The KZ electronic ignition will tolerate non-suppression cables, as will the regulator. The KZ doesn't have any sensititve electronic components that the RF will screw up, however, if you try to use a digital multimeter for troubleshooting or add on any other elecronics (gps etc), they may get messed up. I have one meter that is still not quite right after working on my friend's RD400 with non-suppression ignition.

Originally the KZ's came with suppression wire or resistor caps on the plugs. If it has the electronic ignition, (not ponts) then it probably has suppression wires (but I haven't really done a check of all models). You could also get solid wires and switch to resistor plugs if RFI causes a problem.

I have absolutely no suppression on my bike at all No caps No Plugs No cables. I use a small digital video camera sitting about 5" away from my No.4 plug and have no interference problems at all. I also use a GPS which sits about 12" from 1 & 2 plugs and about the same from both ignition coils and that works just fine also. I also run a 0.060 plug gap which should make things even worse and everything still works fine. Oh almost forgot, there is an HID ballast about 10" away from the coils/Wires/plugs and it also works fine.

Yeah, that is a freakin huge gap. How do you keep the ground strap paralel to the tip?

Do you index?

I only have RFI problems when I use the colortune with my non-supression setup, but that has some metal parts that carry spark exposed. It makes my alarm system randomly go haywire, but has never caused any permanent damage.

I think the Dyna coils cost about 1/2 of oem coils. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

I did a small write up on that. Here's the link.

You are correct. One coil (Kawi #21121-1027) is $103 ( www.kawasakipartshouse.com/#/s/KUS//21121-1027/1 ) whereas Z1E has two Dyna's for $130 ( www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=1306 )

Thanks for all the information from everybody. KZr is excellent.
