30 Apr 2011 13:39
#447835
Heated Vest 6 Amp
Ignition 4.5 ( stock/repro coils and Dyna S)
Turn Signal 3.5
Headlamp Low 3
Headlamp high 4
Horn 1
Brake light 1.5

All tests were donne with engine off
Surprising to me is the turn signal draw

Any comments?

The alternator on these bikes is 12A. This was one reason why Kawi never installed a Halogen headlight and an electronic ignition simultaneously on those bikes. Just these two items draw about 10.5A The reason you are drawing less on your ignition is because you are running 5ohm coils and not the proper 3ohm coils.

The turn signal draw sounds pretty close as those stock bulbs would be about 2 amps each. The horn sounds low. Anyway are you having a problem with the system not keeping up the battery charge level? While your accessories are on put a volt meter across the battery and rev the motor, it should show 13-14v. You could also put an Amp Meter in line with the charging system to see if it is actually putting out more amps than being used.
If considering changing out your bulbs to LED, here is one Web site with info and products. LED lights will use less AMPs, for the signals will require a different flasher.

I believe www.electrosport.com makes overwound alternators to produce higher charging current at lower rpm's. You might have to upgrade the regulator/rectifier to compensate for greater charging ability.

It's not the factory horn but a smaller one from a ZX12R ( needed more room for my oil cooler)
No, I never had any charging issues and that include running the vest, headlamp and for many years the green dyna coils.
Kind of surprising if the aternator is good only for 12a

I think that would be 12 AMPs MAX continuous load. You would not be at that all of the time. The later 3 phase is higher, 20 AMPs.

My thoughts exactly.

The signals should be about double of the brake light assuming there is only one brake light.

Horns are usually not fused because they take so much current. It may be hard to get a good measure on a horn unless you really lay on it and can do something about the inductive spikes. An anlolog meter might be better for that. (Just guesses here, I've never measured the horn current.)
