weak spark in cyl 2+3 was created by 80750E
so i brought my bike in to get some work....bike was only firing on one and four----got it to fire on all but was told the spark is weak from the left coil and was told if the coil is good it might be the "igniter". never heard of an igniter...is this another term for the magneto or one of the pickup coils in the magneto? cant seem to find anything on the internet or from anyone i know about what an igniter is?... does anyone know what may be in between the magneto and the coils?

thanks

How does the the spark on 2, 3 look to you ? If you switch the connections to the coils around does it look any different ?

The ignitor is an electronic gizmo you will find under the battery box and they are very expensive. If you really need one then a member here has designed one you can make yourself. Copy and paste this link home.comcast.net/~loudgpz/GPZweb/Ignition/GPZgmHEImod.html

I would suggest you check everything thoroughly before even thinking of replacing the ignitor.

Do you have a manual ? The manual describes checks you can do on the ignitor to tell if it is faulty.

The igniter is basically a transistor switch used to replace the action of the points. They do blow, but would more likely give you no spark not a weak spark. If I see a weak spark, I suspect the coil. If it's a very old coil, junk it. They don't age well. Z1 has low cost EMGO coils that work (I am running one now).

If you're going to replace the ignition coils, do the sparkplug wires & sparkplug caps too as they age due to heat, vibration and Ozone.

www.z1enterprises.com sells 7mm supression and non-supression sparkplug wires.
Supression means the electrical noise heard on radio's and T.V.'s is greatly reduced.

The EMGO coils come with wires, but new spark plug caps is always a good investment.

It would be best to verify that near battery voltage is measured at the coils, it could have voltage loss along the connectors/ fuse panel/ ignition/ left hand switches. Bad coil or not, this is essential to good spark.

Just for clarification:

A magneto generates it's own voltage and is self contained, there are no external coils.

An igniter is a switch that is triggered by the ignition pickups and in turn triggers the coils. AKA electronic ignition/kettering ignition/transistorized ignition, but not CDI (Capacitive Discharge Ignition).

A points controlled ignition is also a kettering ignition.
