Stock Coil and spark plug wires.

Spring is here and I'm getting my KZ650 C2 ready for summer. New plugs, oil change, brake pads, etc. I noticed that my plug wires were in baaad shape. I figured I'd pick up a set of new wires and install them this weekend. I have my bike in my dad's garage until next weekend so I don't have it in front of me to check, but I've read that if I have the stock coils, then the plug wires might be attached to the coils? Is this true?

And when I say attached I mean non-removable.

On the 750 twin, the wires are molded into the coil. Yours are probably the same. Z1 sells a 4 Ohm OEM coil (EMGO brand) for about $36 so it's smarter just to buy the whole thing than fool with trying to dig the wires out and replace them. Don't know if a four Ohm coil fits yours, it would probably run OK.

I believe that the stock coil is 4.3OHM so I'm thinking that should work. So I guess as long as the spacing is correct I should be able to use that setup. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

I can't tell from the picture, but can you replace the spark plug wire on those coils? It would suck to run into the same problem after replacing coils.

The sparkplug caps should also be replaced as they contain a resistor that supresses the electrical noise of ignition. They unscrew from the sparkplug wires. Many rider have gone to non surpression caps. This may not make friends as radio's will pick up the snap and pop when the plugs fire. Dyna makes a set that should fit,just cut the wires to the right length. Z1 enterprises sells both types of sparkplug wires too.

If they're like the '77 KZ650-C1 the wires are molded into the coils. But you don't need to replace the coils if they're ok; you can buy little connectors that allow you to cut the original wires short and attach new wires onto the stubs. I don't know who makes them, but I have seen them before. Maybe someone who knows the maker can chime in here. Ed

I don't know if the mounting hoes are the same, you need to check. The wires are also molded in. But if you look at the price of the splicers and new wire, it isn't much more to get the whole thing. I personally think old coils should get pitched, they don't age well (guess how I found out).

I believe they are the same coil, but the latter comes with straight plug caps, and the first has none. You would just purchase the prefered caps seperately.

I've also heard that even though I'm running points, I can still use the Dyna 3 OHm Green Coil, which would be great if I decide to switch to an electronic ignition in the future. Would I be pushing this coil too hard?

Yes, you can use the 3ohm Green Dynas. The coils present the load to the ignition, so if the coil ohms are too low, you would burn out the ignition, if the coil ohms were very high, the coils would produce a weaker spark.

They have different bolt spacing, the top link is 4" and the bottom is 3.5". There is also one similar to the bottom link with angled plug caps;
