Wierd ignition mod - Why would you do this?

So the teardown continues and I come across this setup. There's a 4 wire set (which strongly resembles phone line) coming off the pick up coil, bypassing the IC igniter (which is taped off) and is spliced into this mess for the ignition coils.
Questions: Why would you do it?
Splicing 22 gage wire from the pick up coil to 18 gage for the ignition coils. Potential meltdown source?
I haven't tested the IC igniter yet. I'm wondering if it were bad and the PO just did this as a bypass. However, I haven't read about anything like this kind of setup.
Whaddaya think?

i think it was a dyna pick up plate and he had the wires cut too short once upon a time...so he spliced wires on the dyna sending wires to make up the shortened lengths....the gray shield n the "pick up coil" wires is my clue...post a pic oif the electronic ignition...points cover internals....

I'll get a pic and post it soon. Inside the electronic ignition looks pretty clean. Are you saying this was an aftermarket type of deal that allowed the IC ignitor to be bypassed entirely? The only thing left hooked up on it was the ground. Everything else had been cut off and taped up.

X2
looks like the P.O. hacked the wiring on the dyna for some dumb reason. the red, black and green wires in the grey sheathing scream dyna. The rest of that mess screams hillbilly.

Here's the inside. A little blurry, but like I said, it looks pretty neat. You're right about the splices on the other end. Pretty shoddy workmanship

some stock kaw elec ignitions look like dyna in general..if it is a dyna it should say it on one of the pick ups...the reason i say there is a difference is that the stock uses the ic ignitior and the dyna does away with it...the wires get cut by folks in a hurry to part bikes and get snipped...by accidents...by idiot moves ect....i have seen this a few times on dyna s ignitions for sale on a-bay ect....the right thing for the p.o would have been clean male females and like colored gauge wires imo

Ignition converted to Dyna-S doesn't use the stock igniter.
Dyna-S wire does indeed resemble phone line.
